DIY Projects That Last

Today I am sharing my favorite DIY projects that last!

Making your home beautiful on a budget is absolutely possible if you’re willing to put in a little effort. It’s easy to look at someone else’s home and feel like you don’t have the skills to create the same result, but the truth is that most of the DIY projects in our home have been completely self-taught. We’ve spent plenty of time watching YouTube tutorials and reading how-to blog posts, then simply rolled up our sleeves and got to work. Today I am sharing my favorite DIY projects that last and still look amazing years later!

These are the DIY projects that have truly stood the test of time. They’re projects I still use, still love, and would absolutely do again. Every one of them was self-taught and came with plenty of trial and error along the way. Give yourself grace and remember that these results didn’t happen overnight, and many of these projects took months to complete over the course of several years.

1. DIY Beadboard Ceiling and Wall Treatment

Looking around my house, you’ll see that I really love beadboard. I have beadboard in my entryway, boys’ room, bathroom, dining room and basement! It’s decorative wall paneling that’s both versatile and budget friendly, and it adds traditional charm to any space.

In both my entryway and basement, I added beadboard to my walls as a wall treatment to make those rooms have more of an English cottage feel. I added beadboard to the ceiling of my boys’ bedroom and basement as a way to add some visual interest as well as affordably cover up the existing ceiling. I used beadboard in my DIY breadboard project as a backsplash!

Beadboard is relatively easy to work with, and it’s usually a cost effective way to add cottage style charm to your home. It’s readily available at most home improvement stores, and at as little as $15 for a 4×8 panel, you can add a lot of visual appeal on the smallest of budgets.

Because of these reasons, beadboard is one my favorite DIY projects that last, and I have no regrets adding it to almost every room in my house haha My advice is to always cut parallel to the lines and measure twice! 2. DIY Board and Batten Wall Makeover

Board and batten is another wall feature that you will find all over my home. My living room, dining room, and all three of our home’s bedrooms have board and batten on the walls. Board and batten is a type of paneling known for wide boards separated by smaller strips, or “battens”, that creates a timeless, rustic look that blends seamlessly into my cottage style home!

I adore the look of board and batten, and honestly, it’s so simple to install that I carried it all throughout my home to add some cottagey character and flair. Usually I’ll paint the board and batten a separate color from the top portion of my wall to add some contrast. In my nursery, I even added some wallpaper above the board and batten for a whimsical look.

Board and batten is a budget-friendly style choice and can cost less than $100 to install a board and batten wall if you use your existing baseboard with furring strips. My biggest tip is to use a level when installing the first horizontal board, as you may find that your floor is not as level as it looks, especially if you live in an older home like me! You’ll want to space out your vertical boards as evenly as possible, so again, measure twice!

3. DIY Reclaimed Barn Wood Beams for Ceilings and Walls

I can’t emphasize enough how much I love reclaimed wood beams and the character and rustic charm they have added to my home. Eventually, I’d love to have them in every room of my house! I have them in my entryway, fireplace, kitchen, primary bedroom, mudroom and bathroom.

My reclaimed wood beams are used to recreate the exposed structural wood beams found in old cottages or barns, and I actually sourced most of my reclaimed beams from a very old, local barn that was scheduled to be burned down!

The cost for wood beams can really vary, but I was fortunate to get mine completely free as they were salvaged from a barn that was going to be burnt down. I found my fireplace mantel beam on Facebook marketplace, so that’s always a place you can check as well! My advice is to call your local fire station and ask if they have any barn burnings scheduled and if they’d be willing to let you come haul out some wood before they do.
