You may remember that Mike and I renovated our boys room a few years ago, but it was in need of a refresh as separate twin beds suited them better. We started out with bunk beds, but upgraded to a trundle bed that we loved once they outgrew the bunkbeds; however, the boys quickly grew out of the trundle bed as well. I realized that it was time again to give the boys a big kid room makeover as their needs change in this smaller bedroom space as they grow older.

A little while back I shared a whole YouTube tour of the boys bedroom refresh that you can watch here. We purchased the twin beds from one of our local thrift stores and I gave them a fresh coat of paint, as well as a new set of comforters from Beddy’s Bedding, blankets and pillows from Amazon.

We were also fortunate to partner with Birch Living for our boys mattresses. Mike helped me build some under bed storage bins that you can read all about here. I have so many more fun things to share with you all and I can’t wait to bring you all along for our boys bedroom makeover!

To recap, a few of the major DIY projects we completed in our kid’s room was installing a beadboard ceiling and a board and batten wall treatment. These changes made such a big impact in the transformation of our kids bedroom, and I love the charm and character they added to our old house.

In between the bunkbeds and the trundle bed, the boys were sharing a full size bed. They have really gone through a lot of beds haha I knew a queen bed or even a bigger bed like a king was not an option as they were both ready for their own space. However, bed frames can be a huge expense, especially the sturdier, wooden framed beds. They were ready for a big boy bed and (yay!) I found the perfect twin beds for very little extra cost at a thrift store!

They weren’t the nicest looking when we purchased them, but I knew I could clean them up and paint the headboard and footboards to give them a crisp look. I went with a sage green and it was the perfect fit for the color scheme in this space.

Once the beds were painted, I gave the room a nice, deep clean. I wanted to make sure all of their toys, accessories, and special items were pristine as it had been a while since I had given everything a good cleaning.

I love their creativity with their personal items that they make and collect, like Lego creatures and rock collections. I do my best to make sure they have easy access to their belongings without it looking like clutter, so we try to display everything on their shelves. It’s so funny to me how much a small thing like a dead bug or a dried snake skin can mean so much to a little boy haha.

Next, we added some under bed storage using some clear storage bins we purchased from Walmart! We used some leftover barn wood we had from a previous project and screwed them onto the front of the bins with a dresser pull. The extra storage this created is so wonderful as their room only has one small closet.

Because their room does not have carpet, we purchased a new plaid area rug to replace the old outdoor rug that I was previously using in their room, and I love the clean lines texture it brings here. We then we ordered comforters from Beddy’s Bedding to replace their old set of sheets and blankets.

Beddy’s Bedding is amazing as it is a comforter and sheet set all in one. It’s almost like a sleeping bag for your bed as it zips up and makes it so much easier for a little guy to make their bed in the morning! We added a few blankets and throw pillows to complete the look, and I am so pleased with how their beds turned out.

For the room’s decor, I used some old books and antique treasures appropriate for a child’s bedroom. Instead of a traditional nightstand, I opted for some vintage stools instead. For a light fixture I added a cute little plaid lamp to it. I actually added a plaid pattern to one of the lamp shades myself! You can watch how I did it in the video linked above.

My youngest boy loves his stuffed animals, so I bought an old wooden crate to store them in. It’s really the perfect place for all of his treasures and adds to the vintage charm of the whole room. After all, what is a child’s room without a couple stuffed animals?

Of course I had to add some art work to complete the boys bedroom refresh. I found a really cute painting of two boys fishing, which is so fitting as my boys are all obsessed with catching fish lately! They are always going on some adventure that involves catching or trapping animals, bugs and fish haha.

Well friends, that is our boys bedroom refresh! I am so in love with how this space turned out. I’m sure this won’t be the last of the boys room makeovers I will share as they are constantly growing and changing. However, I hope these boys’ bedroom ideas give you some inspiration for your own kid’s room! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Andrea, this room is lovely. I’m considering purchasing Beddy’s sets for my boys’ bunk beds but they’re a huge investment and I want to be sure they’ll last. Can you share how yours have held up after a few years? Thanks!

    1. They have held up excellently! I agree, they really are an investment but to me with bunk beds they are worth it. My sister uses them for her daughters as well and I think she has had hers over 5 years now!
