This vintage sports themed boys bedroom came together perfectly and I am so happy! The project took so much time, thought and effort, but now that it’s finished I can’t help but feel so grateful that we went the extra mile for our boys!
I can honestly say that I love this space. It turned out so much better than I ever imagined, and I can’t wait to share all the details with you guys today!

Let’s go back to the beginning. A few months ago I shared our plans for the boy’s bedroom makeover, but like most of the projects we take on, a lot of those plans changed.

Originally we had planned on keeping their bunk beds and working around them, but the more we talked about it the more we felt as though they really limited what we could do with the space.

Ultimately we decided to take them apart and start with a fresh slate, and I’m so glad that we did. The room immediately felt larger and I was so excited to get to work!
Simple and Functional Vintage Sports Themed Boys Bedroom – Wood Work
The very first project we took on was the ceiling. This project was not for the faint of heart, but oh was it worth it! I truly feel like it’s a feature in the room now, and really draws your attention upward.

My plan is to create a tutorial for the bead board ceiling, just in case you’d like to do something similar! The fan is from Walmart, it’s the Better Homes and Gardens brand and was SO affordable!

After finishing the ceiling we moved on to the walls. We installed board and batten the same way we did in the nursery. You can read my board and batten tutorial here if you’re interested! It’s a simple way to add loads of charm without spending a lot of money.

In order to provide more storage space, we also created a shelf that sits on top of the board and batten on two of the four walls in the room. We purchased the corbels here and used 12 inch wide boards that are wide enough for baskets and bins.

Simple and Functional Vintage Sports Themed Boys Bedroom – Paint Colors
For the wall colors, I went with a basic white trim paint and a beautiful navy blue called “Compelling” both by True Value Hardware.

I love the dark pop of blue against the white walls and white ceiling. The combination is so perfect for the mood I was going for!
Simple and Functional Vintage Sports Themed Boys Bedroom – Shelf and Wall Decor
I wanted to continue with the vintage sports themed feel, so I kept a lot of the decor from their previous space and used it here, as well. An old basketball and some baseball bats, a tennis racket and vintage locker basket add so much character and interest.

I especially love the vintage pennants – one being Air Force (my father in law served in the Air Force) and once being the Henry Ford Museum here in Michigan which we love to visit!

My boys love to fish, so on the opposite side I incorporated another one of my Grandfather’s duck decoys as well as an old minnow bucket. The vintage basket is perfect for all of my son’s super hero masks that they have collected over the years!

The old printer’s tray was my grandfather’s, and it actually works perfectly for storing all of my boys’ lego people! The hooks below were a Walmart find, perfect for hats and hoodies. I’d love to find some antique hooks in the future, but for now these work perfectly!

Simple and Functional Vintage Sports Themed Boys Bedroom – The Bedding
The antique spindle bed was my grandfather’s as well, and I low how it pops against the white walls.
Do you remember the brand new duvet that I found thrifting a few weeks ago?! Can you believe how perfectly it works in this space!? I love it so much! It looks so cozy folded up at the end of the bed, layered with dark blue sheets and a white cotton blanket.

What makes their bed even more special is that our boys are sleeping on a brand new Novilla Hybrid mattress now! Novilla Home has the best and most affordable mattresses that are delivered in a box, right to your door. They come vacuum sealed and inflate once you cut open the plastic with the handy tool they send.
We actually chose to get a second Novilla mattress as well, but in a twin size to roll under the bed on a trundle that my husband made! It will be perfect for sleepovers, or if we end up having a girl and we need all three boys to share this room haha!
For more mattress details as well as the unboxing and installation, be sure to watch the YouTube video linked above!

These mattresses are safe for children, which is also a huge plus. The foam used to make them is certified Certipure-US, low emissions, made without Ozone depletes, produced without PBDE’s, made without mercury, lead, heavy metals, formaldehyde, or phthalates!
They have a ten year warranty and you can use code “PINE” for 12% off your next purchase of the hybrid mattress, mattress topper, and pillow!
I love the addition of the plaid and ticking stripe pillow with the duvet, it gives the bed a collected feel rather than using a bedding set that matches. I made the bed skirt with some blue and white striped ticking and tacked it to the inside of the bed frame.

Simple and Functional Vintage Sports Themed Boys Bedroom – Sitting Area
One of my favorite things about this bedroom is the new sitting area. I found this beautiful striped chair on Facebook marketplace for just $50! It looks so perfect in their room and I love that the boys have a cozy spot to read.
Next to the chair is an antique table that was my grandfather’s, and it’s special to Ethan because he loves playing checkers and would always play on that table whenever we visited grandpa.

Some old books and a vintage fan complete the feel I was going for. I especially love the framed newspaper above the chair, it’s a an article that features my Dad and husband when they won the soccer championship 20 years ago now. My husband was on the team and my dad was the soccer coach, so it’s pretty special to see it in their room!
The ottoman was another thrift store find, brand new from Target. I only paid $8.99 and it’s the perfect place for storing all their Legos!

The rug was an awesome find as well, also purchased at Walmart! It was in the outdoor section and for a 7×10 rug, it was under $100 which is unheard of. I love the fact that it looks like jute, but is very soft and smooth to the touch!
I especially love the fact that it ties in to their gorgeous new Select Blinds. You guys know how much I love working with this company! We have their blinds in our living room, dining room and sunroom and I’m so happy to see them the boys’ room now as well.

They are cordless and spring loaded, so I don’t have to worry about scary cords and children. I chose the prettiest color called Bahama Palm, and I am so pleased with the way the combination of the blue and white against these gorgeous shades. They are so simple to pull up and down every night, check them out here if you’re interested in purchasing new blinds for your own space!

Well I think that about covers everything in this vintage sports themed boys bedroom! What do you guys think?! Do you love it as much as I do? I’m so relieved to be able to check this off my nesting list haha!
I’d love to know your thoughts in the comments below! 🙂

Right now they are just temporarily held there, but I plan to use tacks I think!

Thank you, the boys are so happy and love it so much! As far as the lamp, I actually had it already, I got it from Target a while ago!
