Recently we decided to give our boy’s room a little update and I’m so excited to share the finished result over on my YouTube channel! However, every time we update their space, I’m always surprised by the amount of stuff they have, and the complete lack of storage space to keep it tidy and organized. Today’s blog is all about storage solutions with these easy diy storage drawers!

We usually go through our belongings twice a year to get rid of or donate anything we haven’t used or no longer need, but we still needed a solution to store what we do end up keeping. We generally like to use our closets as a dedicated space for clothing so as to not overcrowd and clutter them, so these diy storage drawers really help to maximize our storage. One of the easiest ways to add additional storage to a space is by utilizing the unused space under your bed!

We have always used clear bins under our beds to keep things stored and organized, and the kids room is no exception. Storage containers make for the perfect under-bed storage drawers and can hold plenty of different items inside, from blankets to legos to seasonal clothes! You can usually purchase them for relatively inexpensive amounts, and they slide under your bed frame with ease.

I hope this underbed storage drawer tutorial inspires you to create your own DIY drawers!

Purchase Your Bins and Wood

This bed storage project started by purchasing these 41 quart clear storage bins from Walmart for only $10 each! However, I didn’t like the look of the plastic bins under the bed. Normally, I’d make a bed skirt to cover up the under-bed storage box, but I had an idea to create faux bed drawers with some barn wood!

Thankfully we already had the wood from previous projects, so we were able to use the leftover materials for this project. The barn wood we used was 3/4 inch thick, but you can use whichever dimensions you prefer! If you are wanting a less rustic look, you could always purchase some plywood and use a wood stain to achieve the style that works best in your home.

Cut Your Wood and Screw In Handles

We measured our bins and then cut the wood to be about 1/2 inch wider on either side to cover the entire front width of the container. Before we attached the wood to the bin, Mike screwed handles into the front pieces.

Once the drawer pulls were installed, Mike then used a 2×4 in between the plastic bin and the front pieces to ensure the barn wood would be attached firmly. He then drilled holes for a fender washer (so the screw wouldn’t go through the plastic bins) and screw from the inside of the bins, then screwed into the 2×4 through to the barn wood.

For extra security, you can choose to use wood glue and some clamps to glue the barn wood and 2×4 together, but for a quick bed storage diy, a few screws and washers work just fine! They slide so nicely under the bed, and the screwed in handles make pulling them out so easy and smooth.

And voila! You have have underbed drawers! It was so easy making these diy storage drawers, and I’m not sure why I haven’t thought of doing this project much sooner!

You can truly turn any clear storage container into a drawer with some wood and screws. I’m wondering if I should try this out on my shelves with all of the homeschool supplies I have. That will be a project for a later date haha For now I’m so pleased with these diy storage drawers!
