The Little Things That Make A House Feel Like A Home To Me

Today I am sharing the little things that make a house a home to me!

While I love thrifty decorating and taking on big DIY projects, I truly believe it’s the little things that make a house feel like a home. Today, I’m sharing just a few of the small details that make a home feel cozy, welcoming, and lived-in to me. These aren’t rules or must-haves; they are simply the little touches I personally love in my own home.

Things That Make A House A Home: Flowers on the Table
If you follow my blog, you know I love fresh bouquet of backyard flowers. There’s just something about having fresh flowers in the home that makes a room feel cared for and loved.

And the best part is that gathering a few blooms or stems from your own backyard is such a simple way to bring freshness and life into a space without spending a penny. I love the beauty of a simple floral arrangement. It’s truly one of those little decorating touches that works beautifully with any style.

A Freshly Made Bed
This is one of those little habits I try to do every day after I wake up! There’s just something about a made bed that instantly makes a bedroom feel more collected, tidy, and inviting. Even better is climbing into a freshly made bed with clean sheets, fluffy pillows, and blankets straight from the wash.

I love layering pillows, blankets, and quilts on my bed to create a cozy, collected look. Starting the day by making my bed is such a simple thing, but it makes a big difference and is one of those little details that makes a house feel like home to me.

Things That Make A House A Home: A Cozy Corner
Corners are the perfect little spots to create a cozy area filled with some of your favorite decor. Whether it’s a corner hutch filled with a treasured Pfaltzgraff collection or a gallery wall showcasing artwork you love, these often-overlooked spaces are a wonderful way to display the pieces that make your home feel personal and special.

A Home That Smells Good
I love walking into a room and being greeted by the cozy glow of a candle and its delicious scent, or the sight of a fresh loaf of sourdough filling the kitchen with that wonderful, comforting smell. Scents can have such a powerful influence on the feeling of a home, and they can be so closely tied to our most precious memories.

To this day, the smell of cinnamon takes me right back to my childhood home and the potpourri my mom used to have going throughout the day. There’s just something special about the way certain scents can make a home feel warm, familiar, and full of memories.

Things That Make A House A Home: Little Signs of Everyday Life
It’s easy to see my home on social media, all styled and tidy, and assume that’s how it looks 24/7. However, I live with four little boys, and a perfectly clean and styled home just isn’t our everyday reality. Our home gets messy; there are days when there are toys everywhere, and sometimes the laundry piles up.

Of course, I try to keep our home tidy, but at the end of the day, a home is meant to be lived in. Some of my favorite parts of our home are the little signs of the people who live here. An art project hung on the wall. A Lego creation proudly displayed on a shelf. Toys left out after a day of playing. These little signs of life won’t always be here, and I hope I never take them for granted. They are part of this season of our lives, so I’m trying to find the joy in them while I can.

At the end of the day, what makes a house feel like home has very little to do with having perfect decor or a perfectly clean space. It’s the fresh flowers, the made bed, the treasured collections, the cozy scents, and the little signs of the people who live there. Those are the details that make a home feel warm, welcoming, and truly ours.
