How to Style Fresh Backyard Flower Arrangements for a Simple Summer Home

Today I am sharing how to create simple backyard flower arrangements using fresh blooms and greenery from your own garden!

I often mention that I love to use fresh stems from my own backyard when I am decorating a space, so I thought today’s post could focus on how I create my own backyard flower arrangements! My backyard is full of different flowers, plants and trees that all have beautiful blooms during the warmer months. I love using elements from nature in my home design, and who doesn’t love a basket overflowing with fresh florals?

Instead of spending a lot of money on fresh bouquets, I like to save money by clipping stems from my yard. These backyard flower arrangements don’t have to be perfectly designed! Even a few simple clippings can make a home feel fresh and bring the beauty of the outdoors in.

1. Clip What Is Blooming Right Now

Don’t overthink matching your flowers. Mix flowers, greenery, herbs, and even branches to create a beautiful backyard arrangement. Simply step outside and clip whatever catches your eye.

I love gathering fresh blooms like lilacs and hydrangeas, but don’t worry if you don’t have flowering plants. Greenery, branches, and other stems can be just as beautiful, bringing plenty of texture, life, and color to an arrangement.

2. Keep the Arrangement Loose and Natural

When creating your arrangement, start with your greenery, then add the larger blooms first. Fill in with smaller flowers, leaving a little space so the arrangement doesn’t feel overcrowded. It doesn’t have to be perfectly full. Varying the height of your stems also adds a touch of whimsy and creates a more relaxed, natural look.

3. Use Whatever Vessel You Already Have

I use all kinds of containers for my flower arrangements. Old crocks, vintage pitchers, mason jars, thrifted vases, and wicker baskets are all favorites in my home. You can find so many beautiful, inexpensive options at your local thrift store. Fresh, beautiful arrangements don’t have to break the bank.

4. Backyard Flower Arrangement: A Few Tips to Help Them Last Longer

Here are a few tips that can help your fresh stems last longer:

• Cut stems in the morning if possible.
• Remove leaves below the water line.
• Fresh water every day or two.
• Recut stems after several days.
• Keep arrangements out of direct afternoon sun.
