The Power of Paint

Today, I’m taking you on a look back at our home before renovations, and showing how the power of paint completely transformed our space!

Summer decor kitchen

My home has changed a lot since we purchased it over ten years ago! While Mike and I have put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into renovating our home, one of the biggest ways we transformed our space was with a few coats of paint! I am sharing four paint color room makeovers to show you the power of paint!

Entryway

The first room I’m starting with is my entryway. The original wall color was a bright green, and while it wasn’t one of the worst shades of green, it definitely wasn’t to my taste. I love calming colors and neutrals like beige, white and gray. Maybe that makes me a little boring, but I really wanted timeless, inviting colors in my home.

Entryway Before

I instantly knew I wanted my entryway to feel brighter and more open. The entryway of our home is actually painted white, which is a basic flat white interior paint we purchased from our local hardware store off the shelf.

However, all of the trim in the entryway is painted the color Stingray by Benjamin Moore lightened by 50%. I fell in love with this greige cottage paint color and you will see I have used it throughout my home as you continue reading this post. It has such a beautiful elegance in the natural light, and brings a sense of serenity to my to my home.

Living Room & Dining Room

Our living room was the same shade of green as the entryway when we first moved in. You can see Mike ripping up carpet in the picture below. Thank goodness there was beautiful hardwood flooring underneath! As new homeowners, we hit the jackpot!

Before area of our home feeling overwhelmed

The built-in’s surrounding our fireplace are painted Stingray in full strength and I absolutely love the warmth and dimension this perfect greige cottage paint color brings to this space. Stingray has such a cozy feel and adds a bit of relaxation in contrast to the simple white on my walls and ceiling.

Our living room and dining room as well as our ceilings are also a plain flat white paint from our local True Value hardware store and the lightened Stingray trim paint continues into both spaces. White is so classic and really adds simplicity to any room; that’s probably why it’s one of my color favorites!

Unlike the living room, my dining room was painted white. Over the years, we added a board and batten accent wall to both the dining and living room to give the spaces more character. The board and batten is the same lightened Stingray color as the trim.

I really like a flat white ceiling as it tricks the eye into thinking the room is taller than it is. I also feel it brightens up the room.

Kitchen

The original color of our kitchen was a very dark orange. We have a galley style kitchen and it really made the space feel smaller and more cramped than it actually was.

Overwhelm with home renovations

I knew we needed to lighten up the room. We chose Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore and had it color matched at True Value. The trim is Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore. I love this combination together in this space and I feel like it compliments our wood beams and stone wall perfectly.

Our cupboards were painted when we moved in as well, so unfortunately I do not know the exact shade of white that was used, but they are a very clean and crisp white.

Master Bedroom

Our master bedroom makeover might be one of my favorites. We truly turned it into such a tranquil space and the cottage style bedroom of my dreams. Once again, the space was painted green and felt dark and closed in.

The paint colors we chose to use in our master on the walls is once again a basic flat white paint from our local hardware store. We painted the trim Stingray by Benjamin Moore lightened by 50%.

If you couldn’t tell, I love a simple white and have it throughout most of our home. I realize that the flat white from my local hardware isn’t much of a help, but I did write a previous post on choosing white paint that may help you more here.

  1. Love the white and beige colors!
Do you have bright light coming into your windows?
I have mostly southeast and northwest windows with a roof overhang that makes my rooms not very bright.
I’m wondering if the white color on your walls would work for mine. I’m just so overwhelmed with trying to pick a white that would work.

    Thank you
