I thought I would start here in my living room. I’m still tweaking and playing with things, but the very first thing that I like to bring into the home after I take down all of my Christmas decor is candles.

Candles are immediately going to give you that cozy feel. I love Antique Candle Co. and have shared them with you before. I’ll link some of my favorite scents, but you can find pillar candles for really cheap. Most of my candle holders are thrifted. I’m always on the lookout at thrift stores for little candle holders.

I put candles all over the house during the winter season, and we love to light them, especially in the evening as it gets darker sooner. My boys love having candles lit during dinner time. It really does make your home feel so cozy. My first tip is to start thrifting and looking for candle holders and put candles everywhere.

Bringing Life Back Into the Home With Plants and Flowers

Another thing that I like to bring into my home after taking down all of my holiday decor is real plants. I don’t know what it is about these winter months, but I look outside and see snow. Everything is dead. When you take down all that Christmas decor, everything can start to feel blah.

When you bring in real plants, it brings life. I love watering my plants throughout the winter season. It keeps me looking forward to spring. I have a whole blog post about the types of plants I like to bring into our home. I usually avoid tropical-looking plants and instead look for darker leaves with a little more whimsy that feel more cottage-y. I typically find them at our local grocery store.

Another thing you could bring into your home is fresh flowers. I’m a pretty frugal person, and sometimes spending money on flowers feels wasteful because they’re just going to die. But hear me out. If I spend a few dollars on stems that last a couple of weeks, the joy they bring, the smile they put on my face, and the life they give the room feels worth it.

Use real flowers for joy in the winter months

You might disagree, and that’s fine. You could use faux flowers, but I have real bundles on my dining room table and in my kitchen. Seeing fresh greens in my home during the winter season feels so good.

Cozy Winter Home Decor Ideas: Decorating With Books During the Winter Season

Winter is the time for rest. During spring and summer, we spend so much time outdoors. I’m usually in the garden getting my hands dirty. Winter is about getting cozy, grabbing a book, cuddling up, and allowing yourself to rest.

I used to hate winter, but I’ve come to embrace it. What better way to decorate than with books? I have a mixture of books; some thrifted just for decor because I like the colors, some antique books and old Bibles that I stack on shelves for texture and conversation pieces, and others that we’re currently reading on the coffee table.

Layering With Blankets and Pillows for Cozy Texture

When I think about winter, I think about layers, especially here in Michigan. Getting cozy and warm means lots of texture. I have blankets everywhere; draped over the sofa, in a basket near the fireplace, on chairs, and on the backs of chairs.

My boys love cozying up with blankets, especially while watching Kids Baking Championship. Pillows add warmth, too. My boys love throwing pillows on the ground and laying near the fireplace with a book. These layers add so much texture and warmth to your space.

Lamps, Lighting, and Baskets for Winter Warmth

Another obvious winter decorating tip, apart from candles, is lamps. There are seasons where I bring in extra lamps because it gets so dark. Wherever I can add lamp light, I do. I’m always looking at thrift stores for unique lamps.

Even the sconces in my sunroom stay on during this season. We also have a lantern in the dining room with a dimmer switch so I can adjust it as the light changes throughout the day. Extra lamp light really adds a cozy feel.

Baskets are another favorite. I decorate with baskets all year long, but especially in winter. You can fill them with blankets, firewood, or books. I even keep one on the table for bread or whatever we need. Baskets add texture, warmth, and depth after the holiday season.
