I have been on the hunt for an antique hutch to put in my dining room for years. While I loved the little console table that I inherited from my grandpa, my dream was to find a beautifully aged, vintage hutch to give this entire space more warmth character.

Primitive Pine Hutch

While out antiquing with my husband Mike up in Traverse City, I came across this pine hutch and instantly fell in love. I knew it was the perfect piece that I had been searching for all these years!

I knew the natural wood finish would flow seamlessly with my farmhouse dining table and dining chairs, as well as my dining room decor and neutral color palette.

My dining room is one of the small spaces in my home, so I was a little nervous about how it would fit, especially with the floating shelving we installed years ago. I didn’t want it to overwhelm the space, but to be a focal point in my dining area.

Once we got the antique pine hutch into the space, my worries were erased. It was everything I had hoped for! However, the shelves did need to be trimmed down a bit.

While Mike took down the shelves to cut them down in size, I started working on filling the holes and painting the walls where the shelves previously were. Because our walls are plaster, it was a little tricky filling in the holes. I also had to paint the spaces where the shelves were installed because I painted around the shelves when we redid our dining room paint colors years ago.

The white walls and ceilings are just a plain white paint from our local True Value hardware store and made our dining room feel much more open and airy! All of our trim and board and batten accent walls are Stingray by Benjamin Moore lightened by 50%.

timeless paint colors

I know shades of whites and beiges can be a popular choice for paint color trends, but I feel they have a timeless elegance and can make any space feel lighter and brighter. I have previously toyed with adding wallpaper for some color and texture, but I’m not sure how it would affect the overall mood of the room. I love a classic and simple look!

Decorating small spaces

After adding my beautiful pine hutch, I felt like my corner cabinet no longer fit in well with the rest of my space. There was too much brown happening, and even though I loved the color I had previously painted my corner cabinet, it was time for a change.

antique aging process

I searched Pinterest for some primitive furniture inspiration and decided to give it an aged antique finish using Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in the shade Aviary, watered down white paint and some dark wax to finish. I love bringing pops of blue into my home as I find the color brings some comfort and calmness into the room.

I distressed the edges and handles a bit with some sand paper and I really love how this piece turned out! I switched out the old brass handle accents with new little wooden knobs as well. The balance is much better now, but I am still on the hunt for a true antique corner hutch.

There’s nothing wrong with a contemporary, modern dining room – it’s just not my personal style! I love the original architecture of our 1930’s home and really try to highlight the beauty of our older home with the pieces I bring in. From fabrics to artwork to lamps, I really just love a vintage look!

The rest of my dining room has remained pretty much the same. I moved around some wall decor that was previously on my floating shelves to the pine hutch. We updated the rug a few months ago, but our statement light fixture and Select Blinds window treatments have remained the same.
