I know I’m not a women’s fashion blogger and I don’t pretend to be a fashionista that knows all of the current trends haha but I thought I could share a few tips to help you save some money on some staple pieces for your closet. I am so excited to share how our family saves hundreds of dollars every year by thrifting for clothing, and I hope you feel inspired to shop for your own thrifted spring clothing haul after seeing my finds.

I will warn you that I do have a specific style that might be considered “boring” and “dull” to most people, but I am simple girl and I like to stick to the basics when it comes to a lot of things, including fashion. I have what some refer to as a capsule wardrobe, which is essentially a minimalist collection of versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched together. I usually go for neutral colors and opt for comfortable, quality materials like cotton.

Thankfully, my local thrift store is typically divided up and sectioned off into colors, so if I am looking for a specific color or piece, I know where to go. In my latest haul, I knew I wanted to find a denim top for the spring season, so I started looking in the “blue” section. I always like to have intentionality when I thrift; having a general idea of what you’re looking for not only will reduce purchasing unneeded items, but will help you find what you actually want and will wear!

Another item I was on the hunt for were some dresses! Lately I have been trying to avoid materials like polyester as they don’t hold up as well over time and really aren’t great for your skin. I try to purchase cotton and linens, and I ended up finding some great basic dresses that will pair well with cardigans, oversized button down tops, and jean jackets. Not only will these pieces last due to their sustainable materials, they can be worn so many ways.

I also always check out the kids and mens section for my husband Mike and my boys! You will be surprised at how many quality, name brand items you can find in a second hand shop that are in like new condition. Some store like Target will even donate their clearance items to Goodwill. Thrifting for children has saved us so much because kids grow so quickly and are constantly needing new items! Plus, you can save the items for your next child if they’re still in decent shape. My youngest son Isaiah wears items all the time that my oldest boy Ethan wore!

My capsule wardrobe has a lot of neutrals, denim and stripes that I will mix and match throughout the spring season. I highly recommend finding some staples that can be paired with multiple outfits. A basic white t-shirt can be paired with any bottoms and can be dressed up or down. A good, vintage jean jacket is my go-to thrifted spring clothing piece as it’s perfect for the weather and can be worn with nearly anything. I also love a good ball cap or even a cute sun hat for spring!

I also recently splurged and purchased these elastic waisted jeans on Amazon because I knew they could be paired with so many different items in my closet and the waist would be comfortable! Anything loose fitting and comfortable is where I’m at in this stage of my life and these jeans are a gem haha However, you can definitely find a great pair of jeans at thrift stores too! I have a thrifted pair that I’ve been wearing for years and actually just purchased a nifty little button extender for them haha

Thrift stores are full of amazing accessories and statement pieces that will save you hundreds of dollars on clothing! I hope you will give thrifted spring clothing a try this spring season!

  1. Great post! I also shop the thrift store for clothes. Your outfit combinations have really inspired me to mix it up. I hope you do more clothing posts.

  2. What a great post about shopping with intentionality at thrift stores for fashion.

Your choices are classics and look amazing on you. They are not boring but lend the foundation to add fun accessories to mix it up.

We have a local consignment shop that carries quality named brand women’s clothing and accessories. I’ve shopped there for years but they struggle to make ends meet as many locals won’t set foot in a thrift store. I scratch my head at that one, as I get compliments all the time for purses, clothing I’ve bought there. When I immediately share where I bought them I get the “I’ve never been in there” responses.

Thank you for the post and the reminder we can save money and look great shopping locally at thrift stores.

    1. Oh my goodness, that store sounds amazing and I completely agree! I don’t know what I would do without thrifting and that goes for my decor and clothing!
