Every year I am so excited to put up all of my Christmas decorations, and before I know it, the season is over and I am trying not to cry taking down my Christmas tree and putting everything away. The feeling of a new year always helps my mindset, but every room seems empty without the holiday decor.

Each new year however, I challenge myself to think of new winter decorating ideas, and today I am sharing how to make your home feel cozy after the holidays. I hope these winter decor ideas inspire you to create a cozy feel in your home this year as well!

Layer Textures for Warmth

If you have been following along for any length of time, you know I always encourage layering textures for warmth. Throw blankets, fuzzy warm fabrics, soft throw pillows all made from different textures are essential for a cozy winter home.

I have blankets thrown across different seating, a blanket ladder to bring coziness to the wall space and a variety of pillows as well. Area rugs help pull all of the textures together in larger spaces too. I even lay out tea towels across side tables as accents to really help everything feel as soft and cozy as possible.

Textures also help to make your home feel warm and inviting in the colder winter months. I love linens and textures with natural elements, but use whatever your personal style is: velvet, flannel, faux fur throws, chunky knits – anything that brings that cozy feel and helps you transition from holiday decor to winter.

Another way to add textures if of course to incorporate baskets. I use them for everything from decor to book storage, they just add in the perfect touch of warmth and are another easy to find item thrifting!

Warm Lighting

Although the Christmas string lights are gone, and at first you have to adjust to the rooms in your home feeling a bit darker, you can still create ambiance with lighting. Use table lamps, floor lamps, and candles to bring soft, warm light to your spaces. After a few days without the string lights, the cozy glow of your lighting will help your home feel cozy after the holidays.

I love to thrift this time of year to look for new lamps, and candlestick holders. Finding the perfect pieces I can tuck into a space to bring a warm glow to a room or a delicious scent with a candle makes my home cozy.

I love scents like vanilla and cinnamon this time of year, and of course my favorite clean company Antique Candle Co. has all of the perfect options! I have so many of their candles all over my home burning all day long. Not only do they smell heavenly, they are also non-toxic and add that much needed warmth during the cold winter months.

Reassess Your Furniture

The extra space left after taking down Christmas decorations is a great opportunity to rearrange furniture and refresh your space. I almost always move my furniture around in my living room each year to fit the tree, so once everything is taken down it’s time to either put it back where it was, or try something new.

This year, I moved my armchairs back to their original spots, but I’m especially excited about a brand-new addition to our kitchen—a beautiful plate rack my husband made! I can’t wait to share more about it with you in the future. After Christmas, I always find myself craving change in my home, and this plate rack was the perfect addition to refresh our kitchen.

As for the living room, I’m still considering a few changes, but I’ve learned it’s important to take time with your home after taking down holiday decor. Rather than rushing to fill the empty spaces, it’s better to sit with the space and make intentional changes that you’ll truly love in the long term. Plus, taking down all of the holiday decor is quite the workout, so rest is necessary afterwards haha

Add Warm Colors to Make Your Home Feel Cozy After the Holidays

I love to incorporate warm, neutral tones through decor like pillows, throws, and even artwork. Shades like rust, mustard, deep green, or soft beige can help create a comforting and cozy atmosphere. I tend to stay towards the more neutral colors, but I have loved adding artwork all throughout our home that brings in even more color into each space.

I purchase most of my artwork thrifting or antiquing, but I have found beautiful things on Facebook marketplace as well. Like I said above, be patient with your space. Take the time to assess and see what each room needs color wise, whether it be a simple pop of mustard with a throw blanket or a beautiful, vintage piece of art. This way, you will truly know what to look for when you are out shopping for the space instead of aimlessly wandering the aisles.

Use Natural Elements

I touched base on using natural elements quite a bit over this past year. I incorporated real plants all throughout my house and this year did the same. Wherever I couldn’t use real plants, I used stems. Faux stems and flowers in vases or other pretty empty vessels bring a pop of greenery, life and coziness to every space.

I try to incorporate natural elements in several spots all over each room; side tables, my coffee table, on top of my piano in my sunroom – you can see them all throughout. They really are the perfect winter decorations, but work all year as well!

Taking down your Christmas decor doesn’t have to mean the end of coziness. With a few intentional changes, you can create a home that feels warm, inviting, and perfect for winter. Remember to be patient. Don’t rush filling areas that feel empty in your home right away. Slowly incorporate these elements and embrace this time as a chance to refresh your space and make it uniquely yours.

  1. Andrea,
This all looks so beautiful! Could you share any links of your 3 blankets? I am trying to find a good match for my home.
Also, how do you recommend going about understanding where to add things like beams or lighting in the home without it becoming too much? Just love all you share! Keep it coming! 😊

    1. Thank you so much, that is so kind! My blankets are from a few different places, I usually find them at Marshall’s or TJ Maxx, one of these is from an Etsy shop I used to have on my bed too. Sorry I can’t help more, but I feel like you will have great luck at those stores, even Home Goods as well!

  2. Love all the ideas!! At my house I leave the twinkly lights up all winter. It helps to keep it cheerful and adds so much cozy. And yes to candles and other soft lamps books and blankets. 🥰

  3. Love that stunning plate rack! So unique & beautiful!

I use several of the ideas you shared to cozy up our home in the winter after (most of) the Christmas decor has been put away. I use neutral colors with texture for garlands in windows & on mirrors. I use glass, mirrors, silver & gold to bring in light & gentle sparkle. I keep up any Christmas decor that is wintery like snowflakes & greenery (minus any red accents). I even keep up the wintery Christmas village & our Christmas tree for as long as possible. There are plenty of blankets to wrap up in & picture books about winter on display.
