An Early Summer Home Tour Full of Fresh Lilacs: Step Inside

The lilacs have bloomed here in Michigan, and I am so excited to be sharing a little early summer home tour with you all today!
Happy Friday friends! Can you believe it’s already June? I’m sure I say this about every season, but lilac season has got to be one of my favorites haha lilacs make the best early summer decor for cottage homes, and every year I love to welcome the summer season with some fresh cut lilac arrangements in my home. Lilacs add so much charm and a beautiful pop of color to my summer home decor, so today’s blog post is an early summer home tour!

My home has been going through some changes the past few months, and I’m excited to show you what I’ve been up to in this little cottage home tour. I love the freedom homemaking has given me to create the home of my dreams! From my dining room update where I added a gorgeous, vintage pine hutch to my living room refresh where I added some extra storage with shelves with thrift store decor, I hope this summer home tour gives you some inspiration for your home!

Summer Entryway

Let’s start in my entryway. I kept things pretty simple here, just adding some fresh lilacs to a pretty copper pitcher on the little bench I have here, as well as some lilacs to the three tiered basket I have by my front door.

I also like to add sun hats, a straw bag or a jean jacket on my number hooks as summery accessories. I love using practical items as home decor because I usually already have them on hand in my closet or I can find them very cheap at thrift stores. I like to “shop” my own home for decor over spending money on a bunch of new decor every season.

The next part of my summer home tour brings us to my living room which was given a little refresh a few months ago. I was craving some change in this space, but instead of going out and purchasing new pieces, I decided to take a little stroll through my home and see what pieces I already owned that I could bring in.

I purchased these pine shelves a while ago with my mom and finally found the perfect spot and placement for them behind my Ikea armchairs.

I love old crocks, earthenware, and pottery dishes, so I collected a lot of similar accent pieces to place on this shelf. I thought maybe some wicker baskets on top might help to soften all of the square lines.

In the opposite corner, you can see I stole the little pine table that was previously in the entryway. It’s really, really skinny, so it’s perfect for this little corner. I took all the pieces of art that were on the walls and hung that on this side of the living room for a little gallery wall.

I’m just adding a few pieces to this table here—just a little basket, a plant, a candle. Nothing too busy, but makes the living room feel like a new space.

I of course had to add a lilac centerpiece to the coffee table bench in front of my sofa. I’m still on the hunt for the perfect sofa for this space, but haven’t been able to find one yet. For now I’ll just switch up the pillows and pillow covers to give it a fresh look.

As bloggers trying to give our viewers the best YouTube experience or social media content, it can be really tempting to keep buying new pieces for our homes to keep up with the latest features and trends we see on Pinterest, Instagram or Facebook. However, I really try my best to not only be frugal, but to be content with what I have. Sometimes the best changes can be made with pieces we already own!

Our next stop on my summer home tour is my dining room! We also gave this space a little update a few months ago, one of them being the addition of this beautiful pine hutch. I have been on the hunt for years for an antique pine hutch for my dining room. I found one a few years ago that just didn’t quite work in this space that I now have down in my laundry room.

When I found this piece, I instantly fell in love. Because I am so frugal, I almost left it behind, but thankfully my husband Mike finally convinced me to bring it home. After trimming down our DIY floating shelves, this hutch was the perfect addition to my dining room and really just a dream come true.

Similarly to the shelves in my living room, I added some pretty baskets to the top, as well as some glasses and copper pieces to the shelves. A fresh lilac arrangement completes the look and adds that much needed pop of color!

I am really loving the rug under my dining room table now that I’ve sat with it for a while. Anytime I make a change, I need some time to adjust to be really sure that I love something. Sometimes I find that I really love the change, but honestly, sometimes I don’t and I go back to the drawing board haha I call it “playing” with my home.

Our next destination in my summer home tour is my kitchen! I haven’t changed this space much; I have simply added a few lilac arrangements to some pitchers on my stove, side table and countertops.

I am still so in love with this vintage inspired DIY plate rack that my husband built for me. I have a step by step guide on how to build your own if you’re interested! I have some of my Pfaltzgraff collection displayed here, and it truly adds so much vintage charm to my kitchen.

Last year we added this English cottage inspired vent hood above our stove, and it’s been one of my favorite additions. The rustic reclaimed wood beam is really the star of this space!

My sink is always filled with freshly cut flowers or stems this time of year. I can’t help myself – I just love to bring the outdoors in!

Well friends, that’s the end of my early summer home tour! I hope you enjoyed seeing how I arranged my lilacs throughout my home, as well as my simple summer decor. I really like to keep things simple, bright and neutral for the warmer months, letting my freshly cut flowers and stems bring in freshness and color. Let me know how you decorate your home for summer in the comments below!
