Happy Valentine’s Day my friends! Usually when you think of Valentine’s Day, your mind can get wrapped up in the romance of it all. February hits, and we dream of flowers, candies or chocolates and maybe even a romantic date night for two. However, as a busy homemaker, sometimes the romance can be put on the back burner as we get through our monotonous daily schedules.

Now, there is nothing wrong with wanting a romantic getaway, gifts or a sweet card! We should be spending intentional one on one time with our spouses, but Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be entirely dedicated to them. Maybe this holiday, we can try to think of ways to make the day a little extra special for the entire family.

Homemaking as a stay at home mother

I wanted to share just a few simple family Valentine’s Day ideas with you to make your day a little extra special for your kids. I know what you’re probably thinking: today is supposed to be my special day! I make every day special for my family, and I deserve a break! And you’re probably not wrong to be honest, but making special holiday memories with your children is something that will truly stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Simple Homemaker Everyday Moments

One of my fondest memories was my dad coming into my school to give me chocolate on Sweetest Day (this is a holiday that is very similar to Valentine’s Day, but is mostly celebrated in the midwest region). Every year without fail, he would come into my classroom to give me a big hug and a big chocolate bar. That small little act made me feel so special and loved, and as a mom, I want to create similar memories and traditions for my boys.

Make A Special Valentine’s Day Meal Or Treat

What are some sweet treats or desserts that your kids really love? Maybe you could a special breakfast with heart-shaped pancakes, chocolate syrup and marshmallows! Or you could make heart-shaped pizza for dinner, with heart-shaped cookies for dessert!

One thing my husband Mike really loves to make for our boys is French Toast! It’s a simple recipe that we pull out for special occasions. We like to use artisan style brioche bread, but any thicker and soft slice of bread will do. For a loaf of bread, we usually use about a dozen eggs. We whisk the eggs together with a teaspoon of vanilla, half a teaspoon of salt, cinnamon to taste and about a quarter cup of milk.

We then pour the mixture into a large glass casserole dish and place the slices of bread into the dish to really soak up the mixture. Make sure you really let the bread soak up the mixture! At least three minutes on each side, but if you are using gluten free bread, add about two minutes to that time. Next we let some butter melt in a frying pan and then fry the pieces of bread until crispy, about a couple minutes on each side. You can serve with whip cream, berries and syrup – really the topping options are endless! Chocolate fondue anyone? Haha 🙂

Make A Valentine’s Day Craft

I don’t know about your children, but man my boys love to do crafts! Homemade Valentine cards are such a simple DIY craft that is sure to make their Valentine’s Day special. If you have multiple children, encourage them to make a card for each of their siblings and maybe even have them write a short sentence with one reason why they love them.

You could also make Valentine’s Day decorations! My boys love making a simple paper chain, and it is such an easy craft for children that will have probably have them occupied for a while haha These are just a few creative ideas for the Valentine’s holiday.

Create A Yearly Valentine’s Day Tradition

Having a specific, special activity you do every year will create memories that will last a lifetime. A few fun family valentine’s day ideas would be to have a silly dance party, pull out some board games for a family game night, or curl up on the couch with some pillows and blankets and have a family movie night.

Being present in your children's lives at all times

Try to think of activities that you maybe wouldn’t normally let your children do every day. My boys love playing video games, but we try to make it a special activity rather than letting them play every day. Maybe have a video game tournament with your kids or teens. Or if you’re feeling really adventurous, organize a Valentine’s Day scavenger hunt with a big celebration as the reward for finding the last clue.

Finding Joy Amidst the Trials of Motherhood

My mom created traditions for us that really made holidays extra special. These Valentine’s Day ideas are just a few simple ways to make your holiday something your children will look forward to every year.
