I don’t know about you, but right around February I really start to feel the dreariness of the winter season. January feels like it lasts a year and the snow just keeps piling up. Don’t get me wrong, I love a beautiful winter scene and I am so thankful to experience the different seasons here in Michigan, but sometimes I start to feel trapped in my home because I don’t want to go outdoors and brave the freezing cold temps.

However, a positive of being stuck indoors is that I can really take the time to focus on my home. Whether that’s adding some new home decor or switching up some old pieces and furniture, I enjoy “playing” around with my interior design. I also love to spend more time in the kitchen, cooking up some hearty meals and baking warm sourdough bread and sweet desserts. I also spend more time cleaning, tidying and organizing my home in general!

Today I want to share a few ways I keep my home tidy as a mom of four young boys. I want to encourage you that is is possible to maintain a clean home as a busy homemaker, but not to be discouraged if your home isn’t always perfectly organized. Our most important role as a homemaker is to be present for our children, so if that means leaving a little mess in the kitchen to play a game of tag with your kids, go for it! Cherish those special moments because they won’t last forever. Remember some day our homes will be sparkling clean, but they will also be empty, and we will miss those moments of pausing to be present with our babies.
Clean As You Go
Having a tidy home – especially when you have kids – can be hard work. But having a clean home? That’s another challenge altogether. I have four little boys that are constantly dragging in dirt, touching clean walls with dirty fingers, and pressing their faces up against our French doors in our living room. I used to be able to clean my entire home, top to bottom, in one day. The cleaning would last a good week or more, depending on whether or not we had company etc.

These days, cleaning almost feels like something that needs to be done daily. At times it can feel overwhelming, and even pointless. One step forward, two steps back. You are on your knees scrubbing the bathroom floor only to walk into juice being spilled all over the kitchen floor. I completely understand, and believe me, I’m in the thick of it.

Sometimes I see Pinterest cleaning lists and I get it, that used to work for me. And if that’s what works best for you, amazing! I have a list available if that’s just how your brain works. Laundry on Mondays, Windows on Tuesdays, Dusting on Wednesdays, etc.

Maybe a list is what you need for accountability, and that’s perfectly fine. That’s why I created one, and to be honest I think they can be really valuable.

In this season of life, my cleaning routine is more-so what I like to call “clean as you go.” If you see that it needs cleaning, do it right then and there. If the refrigerator looks sticky and disgusting because a child just opened it, stop what you are doing and wipe it down quickly.

Now I realize this might not work all the time. I can’t always stop in the middle of homeschool and start vacuuming because I notice the floors are dirty. Vacuuming takes a bit more time that simply wiping down the toilet. I get that. So for larger chores, try to schedule them in and try especially to involve the kids.

My boys are getting older and it is important to me to raise them to be responsible and capable young men. My older boys vacuum the stairs, dust the house, wash windows, clean toilets, and they wipe down their bathroom sink. They can bring laundry downstairs and empty the dishwasher. These are easy tasks that can be included in their chores list, and they are also life skills that will be invaluable later in life when they are on their own.
How To Clean Your Home Safely and Quick
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good deep clean. But deep cleans take a lot of time and usually I have to schedule a day where I dedicate my time to cleaning every room. As a mom, I just don’t have time to deep clean my home every day, so I am always looking for ways to clean my home as quickly and efficiently as possible to make more time for more important things like quality time with family.

One of my favorite tools is my Norwex microfiber cleaning cloth. I have talked about this amazing little cloth before, but I am just going to keep sharing it because it is truly a miracle product for me! I clean my ENTIRE home with these cloths and all you need is water. No chemicals, no fumes, no harmful toxins. Just water! A damp cloth can clean your entire home better than your favorite all purpose cleaners.

It sounds too good to be true, but these cloths were a miracle for me. They remove 99.9% of bacteria from surfaces, and they have silver woven throughout them so that the cloths literally self purify as they hang to dry. No need for disinfectants! I use them to dust my entire home, to wash windows and mirrors, to clean bathroom sinks, my stainless steel appliances, my kitchen countertops, dishes, pretty much everything.
