This gluten free, dairy free chowder is the perfect meal for a chilly day. It’s rich and creamy and so satisfying that you would never know it’s missing dairy!

Hey everyone! SO many of you have asked for the recipe to this gluten free, dairy free chowder so I’m finally sharing it here on the blog! I also recently shared a gluten free meatloaf recipe as well as a gluten free banana bread recipe if you’d like to check those out as well! 🙂

I realize we are entering into spring, so chowders and soups may not be a part of your weekly menus anymore. But for us here in Michigan, we still have some chilly days ahead. In fact, I usually make this recipe all year long!!

This chowder is so rich and creamy, you won’t even notice the fact that it’s missing milk or heavy cream!

It all started with my Mom’s traditional chowder recipe. I LOVED it growing up, so once I got married she shared it with me and I began making it as well.

After having my third child, I gave up dairy because I was nursing and I knew it bothered Caleb. I played around with a lot of recipes and discovered some awesome substitutes for milk and butter, but this recipe is by far one of my favorite adaptations!

I could not believe how delicious and creamy this chowder turned out even after removing the heavy cream! I can’t wait to share it with you today, I hope you love it as much as I do!

A few special notes –

Yes, there is some coconut flavor in the chowder. I personally love coconut so it doesn’t bother me at all.

No, you do not need to use lobster meat when you make this recipe. I often use crab meat instead.

Yes, my husband and two older boys (ages 3 and 5) love this chowder! And I hope you will, too!

The recipe looks wonderful and i will certainly be trying it soon. Wanted to let you know that I am a new reader and love your blog. Your house is so cute and I love your dishes as I should, I’ve been using those the same pattern for 40 year . I have several sets of china and stoneware but these are my favorite.
I want you to know that the print on your blog is so pale that it is difficult to read and as as I type this I am unable to read what i’m typing because its so dim. I’m certain I have typos but since I cant see what I’m typing I hope its better on your end.

    1. Oh my goodness Cookie! First of all, THANK you so so much!! You have no idea what comments like this mean to me!! 🙂 As for the font – this is something that I’ve been told a couple of different times by other readers. I have been meaning to look into it and see if it’s something that I can change, so thank you for reminding me to do that!! 🙂

  2. I am allergic to corn & potatoes. Will this recipe work still if I illuminate them? Also, will almond milk work instead of coconut!

    1. Hello Leeza! I have not tried it without these things, I am sure you could try replacing them though! I hope it ends up delicious for you!
