Hello! I’m Jessica, Andrea’s older sister and I am honored to be able to share our dark academia home with all of you! Transforming our Cape Cod home built in the 2000’s into a dark, moody vintage haven with traditional touches was a very rewarding journey and despite this currently being a trend, I have been drawn to this style for several years now.

Today I am only sharing our first floor main spaces, the living room, dining room, kitchen, and hallway which all embrace rich colors, classic materials, and timeless decor. Here’s a detailed look at how we achieved this dramatic yet cozy transformation.

The Vision

The goal was to create a space that exudes the dark academia aesthetics of warmth, nostalgia, and sophistication. I wanted a very moody space with a dark color palette. I originally wanted to color drench our space wall to ceiling, but we ended up deciding on the walls alone. The paint color was our primary focal point since my husband and I felt it effected the entire interior design.

For paint colors, I wanted a different rich, deep color in every room. We landed on green for the kitchen and I definitely underestimated how difficult choosing the right green would be. Thank goodness for Andrea’s advice on getting paint samples. We ended up with TEN different paint samples before we finally decided on the winner.

The primary paint color used throughout the home is Lafayette Green by Benjamin Moore, a deep, moody shade that definitely set the tone for the vintage ambiance. This color choice creates a cohesive and enveloping atmosphere, so perfect in fact, that we took the plunge and decided to paint all of our main living spaces the same color.

We used different sheens on the cabinetry to slightly set it apart, but once the paint was all up on the walls, we were very pleased it was the perfect color choice for the design style we were going for.

Dark Academia Kitchen: Functional and Stylish

The kitchen was definitely our biggest challenge. We began with this space, choosing elements that I felt all brought the moody vintage design to life. Here are the changes we made in this space:

  • DIY Butcher Block Countertops: Replacing the original formica counters with butcher block added warmth and a timeless appeal.
  • Green Kitchen Cabinets: The Lafayette Green cabinets provide a seamless transition from the walls, creating a cohesive look; the gold pulls really popped against the green.
  • Vintage-Inspired Fixtures: Classic hardware and a farmhouse sink blend perfectly with the vintage aesthetic. We installed under cabinet lighting and a pretty pendant light above the sink. We also installed a gold faucet in the sink.

  • Hardwood Flooring: The rich textures in the hardwood floor really stood out in this space. We replaced laminate flooring that was here and it made an enormous difference.
  • Bold Backsplash: Originally we wanted a green backsplash, but pricing was one of our top priorities and we could not justify the difference in price between the green and the black tile. Ultimately, we love the black though. It’s a very rich contrast between the warm green and wood touches and pulls in the details of the stainless steel appliances like the side of the microwave and stove that are exposed.
  • Vintage Decor Touches: We used different vintage decor touches like the bright red oriental rug in front of the sink to bring even more warmth to the space. Live plants on the window sill collaborated perfectly with the rest of the green as well.
  • Dark Academia Interior Design: Antique furniture like the desk in the kitchen fits the dark academia style perfectly. You can add globes, books, and plants like we did to warm up this little nook in this space.

Living Room: A Cozy, Timeless Retreat in a Dark Academic Home

The living room was our next challenge, we wanted moodiness but also a cozy retreat filled with vintage charm and traditional touches. I searched Pinterest for hours for new ideas on how to create perfect space for lounging and for lively discussions while entertaining guests and enjoying family time. I really wanted this to be a bold space, but also still a comfortable sanctuary in the middle of our home.

We originally did not like the fireplace, but thankfully we decided to wait until everything came together and we ended up loving it as the focal point of the room. We made a bold decision to not have a television in this space as well and so far have not regretted it at all! Here are the rest of the home decor touches in this space:

  • Rich, Moody Walls: Lafayette Green by Benjamin Moore is a forest green color that envelopes the room, providing a rich backdrop that enhances the vintage furniture and decor. It is also the perfect background for all of the artwork and matching long dramatic draperies in green fabrics with gold curtain rods.
  • Leather Armchairs: Classic, tufted leather armchairs add a touch of sophisticated mood and provide comfortable seating.
  • Velvet Sofa and Loveseat: A plush, green velvet sofa set complements the wall color and adds a layer of luxurious comfort. These are so comfortable too, and I love how affordable they were to bring into this space. A large red rug with green accents ties in the colors of the velvet pieces perfectly.
  • Antique Accents: Vintage artwork, a vintage themed light fixture, brass lamps, candles, and antique side tables bring a sense of history and elegance to the space. I also incorporated antique and vintage books that bring in hints of color and a touch of dark academic touches.

  • Warm Lighting: Table lamps and a vintage-inspired chandelier offer plenty of warm, inviting light, creating a cozy ambiance perfect for relaxation.
  • Other Dark Academia Design Pieces: Two large furniture pieces definitely make a statement in this space, one being from my grandpa that we used as bookshelves and the other a Facebook Marketplace find that we hung up on the wall. I also found a burgundy floral settee at a garage sale that I placed under a large thrifted print. Just like Andrea, I love to antique, thrift and search Facebook Marketplace for treasures and so many things throughout my home have been purchases I have been so excited to find.

Dining Room: Elegant and Inviting

The dining room was more simple to put together so this space came last on our main floor and continues the dark, moody theme with traditional elements that make it both elegant and inviting.

  • Wooden Dining Table: We added a large wooden dining table that serves as the focal point, perfect for family gatherings and entertaining guests. We already had this table, and loved to be able to bring it into this space. We added a moodier darker rug underneath with hints of black to tie in the chandelier and chairs.
  • Vintage Chairs: These classic dining chairs have a vintage flair enhance the traditional feel of the room. We may end up looking for something a bit more traditional, but once again we already had these and I liked the black that they brought into the space.
  • Statement Lighting: A black chandelier with a vintage design hangs above the table, providing both light and an eye-catching feature. This was a more traditional choice than the lighting in the living room, but we were going for a more moody traditional vibe above our table.
  • Dark Academia Decoration Details: Of course we added more antique books on the shelves including some classic literature, vintage artwork, and plants to add personality and charm and I love the way everything looks against the bold green walls.

Hallway: A Dramatic Passageway

The hallway, often overlooked, becomes a dramatic passageway that ties the rooms together. Andrea and my mom helped me pull together this space with a mirror gallery wall.

  • Deep Green Walls: The Lafayette Green continues into the hallway, creating a seamless flow throughout the home.
  • Elegant Lighting: Another small vintage-inspired chandelier adds a touch of glamour and ensures the space is well-lit.
  • Decorative Mirrors and Frames: Vintage mirrors and frames add interest and depth, making the hallway more than just a passageway.

Dark Academia Laundry Room and Entryway

There are two entryways into our home and we use the side entrance the most often. It is a little strange having laundry right in the entryway, but we tried to continue the dark, moody theme throughout painting the cabinets, updating the fixtures and of course adding a gorgeous vintage rug to tie the space together.

Our main entryway isn’t used often, but I included a smaller version of the same red vintage rug, a matching small chandelier and a beautiful antique framed linen cross stitch from my grandpa that says “God Bless Our Home” in a pretty colorful text.

Updating our Cape Cod built in the 2000’s into a dark, dark academia home with traditional touches involved careful planning and a thoughtful selection of materials and colors. By using Lafayette Green by Benjamin Moore as the primary color, incorporating butcher block countertops, and selecting vintage and antique furnishings and treasures, we’ve created a home that is both timeless and inviting. This transformation not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the home but also creates a cozy and welcoming environment that truly feels like a step back in time.

Whether you’re looking to update your own home or simply seeking inspiration, this project showcases the beauty and charm that can be achieved with a dark academia home design. All of these updates were budget-friendly and DIY, and I hope this inspires you to start creating the home of your dreams today, no matter what your design style is! Thanks to Andrea and all of you for allowing me a little bit of space on this beautiful blog! I would love to read your thoughts in the comments!
