Well, hello friends. Last week I shared a whole post about spring cleaning as a mom, and I while I love sharing cleaning and other simple homemaking tips, I also want to make sure I am keeping things real with you all! Real life homemaking is not always glamorous, and it certainly isn’t as perfect as some of my blog posts or YouTube videos may make it out to be. Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook are not real life, and I hope this post is an encouragement to you not to compare your life to mine or others.

Spring Cleaning As A Mom

I think sometimes it’s hard to tell on camera how dirty our house can get. I don’t know what it is about video—you can’t see all the little things like the dust on the surfaces and the cat hair piled up in the corners of the rooms. I mean, maybe you can. I don’t watch my videos closely enough haha I’m sure you guys have noticed things before.

I have a whole blog post about how to keep a tidy home. I’ve done YouTube videos on this before. I think it’s a lot more simple to keep your home clean if your home is tidy. There’s a difference between those two things, and I talk about that a lot in my homemaking course as well. I have a whole segment on cleaning the home and how to keep a tidy home, as well as other favorite homemaking tips and tricks.

homemaking tips

I will admit to you guys—I’ve told you before—I’m definitely type A. I’m a perfectionist. I really don’t like clutter. As a full-time homemaker and stay-at-home mom, I like cleaning schedules and routines, and to keep my home tidy even if it’s not clean. I walk around multiple times a day and tidy up. If there are toys lying out, I make the kids clean them up.

cleaning tips

That’s just my personality. I know everyone is different, and what might not bother you could drive me crazy. We shouldn’t compare ourselves to one another. We all just need to do the best with what we’ve been given.

Here is another one of my cleaning tips: keep your cleaning routine simple. I don’t use a ton of chemicals or cleaners, and it’s not stressful when I have toddlers and children running around. I used to feel like I had to clean during nap time because of the chemicals I was using. Now, I use my Norwex Enviro Cloths and just water, and I feel a lot better about cleaning around my kids at any time. Plus, these microfiber cloths make household chores so much easier!

Another tip I have is to get your kids involved in the cleaning process. They may not always be a willing participant, but it is important to teach them basic life homemaking skills. I give them each a job to organize their toys and put them in bins. I try to limit the time my kids are on my YouTube videos, but you’ve seen this before. Ethan is usually in charge of cleaning the windows. I give him a cloth, and he’ll clean the French doors and windows for me. One time, he even offered to clean the outsides of our windows, which I thought was very sweet.

Teaching young kids responsibility and giving chores to help around the house

My boys usually have different chores. Gabriel cleans the kitchen cabinets. Caleb—he’s only six—can clean baseboards with a little wipe. The boys have been vacuuming for me lately, which is awesome. I homeschool, so we’re home all day, constantly using the space. I think it’s good to get your kids involved in your homemaking routine and show them the value of hard work.

When they see the work it takes to keep a home clean, they try harder to chip in. It’s funny—when Ethan cleans the glass doors, he’ll tell his brothers not to touch them because he knows how much effort it takes to clean them. It’s important to involve your kids if you’re in that stage of life.

Teaching young kids responsibility and giving chores to help around the house

I used to love cleaning the whole home from top to bottom, but nowadays that’s not always possible. I just clean what I can. Sometimes I can only dust, sometimes only vacuum, sometimes just the bathrooms. Showing yourself grace is important. I love the feeling of a completely clean home, but it’s not always doable. Set small goals for yourself. Do what you can, when you can.

I think I’m mostly speaking to young moms. It’s different when your kids are older or out of the house. Just remember—your house will always be there. Your kids won’t be. Prioritize them.

Built in shelving in the basement

There’s a difference between tidy and clean. I function better when my home is tidy. After homeschool, I try to clear the entire table—books, crayons, trash, glue—all gets put away. Having a place for everything is key. Before nap or quiet time, we walk through the home and clean up. It makes cleaning so much easier when the home is tidy.

What overwhelms homemakers is feeling like they have to deal with the mess before even starting to clean. So one of my biggest homemaking tips is to get into a routine that works for you. At night, after the kids are asleep, I walk through the home, straighten blankets, pick up pillows, and do the dishes. One girl I follow says she “puts her kitchen to bed,” meaning she finishes all the cleaning before morning. That helps me function better personally.

We need to teach our kids to steward their homes well, take care of the space they’ve been given. I’m not talking about perfection. Don’t compare yourself to me—our standards are different. I’m speaking on creating healthy habits because we are all creatures of habit! Make caring for your home a part of your lifestyle.

I’ve been working on hospitality and having more people in our home. I’ve realized that when my home isn’t perfect, it can be less intimidating for guests. For years I thought everything had to be perfect, but that can be intimidating. Real life isn’t perfect.

Now my kitchen I can clean probably multiple times a day because, you know, I’m cooking breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I’m wiping things down all the time. It’s that homemaking task that just never ends haha the kitchen sink will always have dirty dishes, the dishwasher will need to be loaded and unloaded, and the endless crumbs will need to be wiped off the countertops.

Some days I like to do a little bit more than normal. I’m take my time with my appliances and trying to wipe them down. My oven, refrigerator and freezer get a nice, deep clean. And you guys, these cloths—they are so tightly woven that they leave your surfaces streak-free. You can use these on glass, wood—I use them on my cabinets, I use them on everything. Every surface. I just love them.

This is another thing that you guys cannot see—you can’t tell on video how dirty the cabinets get, but they get very dirty. Believe me. With four little boys and fingerprints, they get dirty. There’s always stuff splattered on them, and so every once in a while I like to give them a good cleaning. I have a little steamer tool that I love to use on them when I am doing a deep clean.

Another tip I wanted to share with you guys that I always do on cleaning days: I just like to keep mealtime very simple. So basically, you know, there have been days where I cleaned all day and we maybe ordered pizza that night. But on this particular day, I happened to have leftovers in the fridge. I cooked a big spaghetti dinner the day before and I was just able to kind of reheat the spaghetti sauce and pull out the pasta, and we just had leftovers.

So just another simple tip to keep in mind when you’re doing your grocery shopping or making your grocery list and you know you’ve got a big cleaning day up ahead! When you’re meal prepping and deciding on your menu, get some groceries for an easy meal day.

I’ve shared a lot of homemaking tips, but this one maybe wouldn’t be considered a tip. It’s just a personal preference of mine! I always end the cleaning day with lighting some candles. This Sun Kissed Citrus candle by Antique Candle Co. is so good—oh my goodness. It’s one of my favorites. Mama’s Kitchen is also a classic. It has such an amazing scent.
