My Gentle Winter Homemaking Routines: Embrace A Slower, Cozier Season

Gentle Winter Homemaking Routines

Today I am sharing my daily gentle winter homemaking routines that help me embrace the colder months and create a cozy, peaceful home rhythm.

Winter routines

Winter can be hard on homemakers. The cold can sometimes force us indoors and we go weeks without seeing the sun. I know many who struggle with seasonal depression or winter blues, so today I want to share a few of my gentle winter homemaking routines to help combat the dreariness that winter can sometimes bring.

When we embrace the slower season and lean into the coziness, it can help instead of trying to fight against winter and instead work with it. I’m sharing a few simple, realistic rhythms to help get you through these next few weeks. Thankfully spring is just around the corner, so hold on and join me as I share my daily winter homemaking routine!

Why Winter Calls for Gentler Rhythms

Winter can be especially hard on homemakers like myself who thrive on constant movement and checking off to-do-lists. I’m always looking forward to the next project and “playing” with my home. Winter has a way of slowing everything down, and it can sometimes drive me a little stir crazy haha

However, the cold season really is a great reminder from God to slow down and rest. Take a note from nature and use this time as a sort of hibernation from all the business that warmer weather can bring. Trust me, I know how difficult this can be but it’s so worth it to embrace God’s design for His creation. We were not made to be non-stop workers. God created rest for us and is the ultimate example of resting after work.

And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.

Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.Genesis 2:2–3 (NKJV)

God sets the example for rest

Obviously as homemakers, we still have our daily work in the home, but we can implement some gentle winter homemaking routines for an unhurried and cozy life. So let’s get started with my gentle winter morning routine!

A Gentle Winter Morning Routine

I start every morning nearly the same way: coffee haha My husband Mike will go downstairs and pour us both a cup and then we will both spend some quiet time with God. This is such an important part of your day no matter what season you’re in! We need that alone time with God to hear His voice and help align our life with His will.

Quiet time in the morning with the Lord

Sometimes I will stay in my bed and read a few chapters, or I’ll spend that time on the couch in our living room. Either way, the lights are dim, I’m still in my pajamas and usually snuggled up with a blanket. Make your devotional time something to look forward to each day.

Morning devotion routine

Knowing I’m going to enjoy a warm cup of coffee in the soft glow of a candle or bedside lamp really gets me motivated in the morning to wake up a little earlier than my boys and get my day started with God.

Bible reading routine

The next part of my morning consists of getting my boys ready for the day. Thankfully, most of them are able to get up, get dressed and get themselves ready. But there are some days they may need a little extra encouragement to brush their teeth or make their bed haha

Morning routine with children

Next I always like to make a simple breakfast for them. We usually make a simple kefir smoothie that’s both filling and nutritious. We drink these daily! You can save a lot of money by purchasing Kefir grains and making it yourself. We usually use a quart of kefir (strained), two ripe bananas, roughly two cups of frozen fruit and honey to taste. Delicious, gut healthy smoothies for the whole family!

Healthy simple family-friendly breakfasts smoothies

Personally I love to cook, but if you’re not big on cooking, don’t feel pressured to make a gourmet meal every morning. Something as simple as eggs or oatmeal is a satisfying start to the morning, and if your kids are old enough, have them help out on making the meal too! I think the most important part of breakfast is not what you cook, but the time you spend together as a family at the table, especially in our fast-paced world!

After breakfast, we begin homeschooling. The beauty of homeschool is that it’s completely customizable and you can choose what works best for your family. For us, we have found that our boys are most motivated and productive after breakfast.

We don’t homeschool all day either. We spend four or five hours in the morning and that’s it for the day! We have found that our children lose focus and don’t work as well if we try to stretch it out any longer. We always want to homeschool in a way that is most effective for their learning.

Again, do what works for your family! However, if you have been trying to find a routine that works well, try doing a few hours in the morning after breakfast and see if it works for you. It’s been so great for our boys’ education and works well for our family’s schedule.

Gentle Winter Homemaking Routines: Simple Afternoon Habits

After we finish up homeschooling, it’s time for lunch. Much like breakfast, we keep things pretty simple for lunchtime. Sandwiches with homemade sourdough are an easy go-to, or we’ll use leftovers from the previous night’s dinner and reheat them in our oven. We actually got rid of our microwave a few years ago during a kitchen remodel and haven’t replaced it since then haha

Lunchtime routine

After lunch, I like to do a quick tidy around the house, and I have my boys help with it too. We put away homeschool supplies, clear the lunch dishes, and gather any toys that have found their way onto the floor. This simple reset not only brings order back to our space, but also helps my boys develop the habit of caring well for their belongings and stewarding what they’ve been given.

Tidy the house routine

Honestly, this practice is something I like to do throughout the day. This isn’t a full blown, deep clean haha just a quick tidying up to help my mental state!

Cleaning routine

Once homeschool and lunch have been cleaned up, we move on to afternoon quiet time. I started quiet time when my little ones were still napping and it’s such a great reset time for our family. Even though my boys no longer nap, we still set that time aside for individual play or reading in their rooms.

Afternoon quiet time routine

I use this time either to work on my blog or to just rest and drink a soothing cup of tea and read a book as well. I generally like to keep one to two hours set aside for quiet time each day. It’s important to be flexible, but not so flexible that you miss the rest and reset you need to finish the day well. Some days the kids will be full of energy and want to play loudly, and other days they’ll happily curl up with a book for hours. If you begin this rhythm while they’re young, it naturally becomes part of their daily routine, just as much as yours.

Afternoon reset routine

After quiet time, I usually start to prepping for dinner. I’m an experimenter in the kitchen, so while I keep my pantry stocked with staple items and have a general idea of what a recipe calls for, I am constantly switching things up and trying new things. I use this prep time to figure out what I’m making and what I might want to try.

A Calm Winter Evening Wind-Down

Every night we try to sit down as a family and eat a meal together. I believe it’s so important to have at least one meal a day together where distractions like phones are put away and we really focus on connecting with one another. Maybe dinner isn’t the ideal meal for your family to connect this way, but try to either do this at breakfast or lunch. It will make such a difference in your day and for strengthening your family bonds.

Dinnertime routine

After dinner of course is cleaning up the meal and dishes, and then we try to spend some intentional time together to do some kind of family activity. The activity differs every night, but some family favorites are wrestling (I’m just a spectator for this haha), a movie, or a board game. Just one simple activity to do together that is intentional and connects us better.

Family activity routine

The final step in our gentle winter homemaking routines is to have family devotions, worship songs, and prayer. I love this time of teaching my boys about God and praising Him together. It’s so special to watch them grow in their love for the Lord, and I promise it will help your walk as well.
