When I first started blogging, I had so many amazing and helpful friends that were such an encouragement to me. I feel very, very blessed and want to be a blessing to others as well. Well, last week I put up a question box in my stories over on Instagram and asked if anyone wanted me to chat about blogging. I got so many great questions that I decided to turn my answers into a YouTube video!
I have it linked above and I hope it’s a help to you guys!! I will also type out the questions as well as my answers below, just in case you’d rather read them. 😉
How do you come up with blog post ideas? That’s my struggle.
It was a struggle for me too. I remember writing ideas out and getting to the end of my list and wondering “what now?”. I also struggled with thinking that everything I posted had to be this perfect room reveal. The longer I have been blogging, the more I realize that people enjoy seeing the process. Post ideas don’t always have to be forced. They can be a part of your every day life! Ideas for me happen based on what I’m working on at the time. As your audience grows, pay attention to the questions that start coming in. You will begin to see what areas they are interested in and ideas will come to you!
Did you have someone design your blog?
I did have someone help me when I first started out! Her name is Tana over at Your Marketing BFF. She was such a blessing and helped me out of the goodness of her heart. She has such amazing, informative information if you are new at blogging and she also provides services if you are looking for help yourself!
I also have a friend from church whose brother is very experienced with WordPress. I recently wanted to make some changes to my blog, so I showed him my design and vision and he helped me bring it to life!
How do you edit your YouTube videos?
I still use iMovie! I’ve also taken both of Lisa’s blog courses from Farmhouse in Boone. If you are looking to start doing video, I highly recommend that you use her video course for bloggers! She covers everything from equipment to how to create a video from start to finish. I would have saved myself so many headaches if I had taken her course before I started my blog.
How do you stay motivated and consistent before you start earning money?
When you’re not making anything it is difficult to stay disciplined. I was inconsistent when I first started. Lisa’s courses changed everything when I saw her success. It lit a fire under me and I felt that I could do this if I stayed at it and didn’t give up.
How do organize your time with three boys?
There are different seasons of motherhood, especially with little ones. Every afternoon we have nap time for our youngest and quiet time for my two older boys, and that’s when I get the majority of my work done. It takes some time to get into a routine and stay consistent, but I understand that life happens and you can’t always predict what will happen with kids.
We are praying about having another baby and even though I have been very disciplined with my blog in 2020, all of that could change with morning sickness and then a newborn. Don’t beat yourself up about this area. Just try your best, that’s all you can do.
You will find that spending quality time with your family is most important and if you are working too hard on your blog and neglecting other areas, it will affect you and you will become stressed and unhappy. Scale back and work during nap times or bed times, then let it go. The most important thing is your children and your home.
I don’t do any blogging all morning long. I focus on things I can do with my children while they’re awake and then every afternoon during nap time I do the majority of my blog work. I also think ahead on what I will be having for dinner. I start that prep ahead of time so that when I’m filming or typing a post, I know that everything will be ready for dinner when I’m done.
How do you promote traffic to your blog?
I took a very affordable course called Pinterest Strategies by Carly from Mommy on Purpose. It’s such a great course and when I began to implement her strategies, I watched my views begin to climb.
Advice for taking your own photos – do you use a camera or your phone?
I use Lightroom to edit my photos. This is still a learning process for me but I believe it comes easier with practice. I shoot in manual mode. I use a Cannon 80D that we purchased refurbished. It’s excellent for video. I will on occasion use my iPhone11 and it definitely comes in handy during DIY projects. And whenever I need B roll, the iPhone works great. You don’t have to have a fancy camera to start incorporating video!
I started a cooking blog/IG. How can I gain more followers faster?
I’m not an expert in this area, believe me. I think that the best way to gain more followers is just through engagement and getting to know people in the same niche as you. Sharing and commenting on other posts and starting share groups also helps.
I do believe that if you are authentic, real and passionate about what you do that you will find your people. 🙂 For me, the best thing about Instagram is the community. Try not to focus on comparison and numbers or you will be discouraged. Find others that are at a similar stage as yourself and make connections!
How long after you started blogging did you see income coming in?
I started my blog in 2017, but I didn’t really start being consistent until this year. I decided to try to share at least one blog post (sometimes two) every week along with video. I believe it was in April that I started seeing results and that’s when my blog was monetized.
I qualified for something called Mediavine, which means I had a certain amount of views that qualified me for advertisements. By the way….I have had readers tell me that they loved reading my blog, but that the advertisements were irritating.
I totally understand the frustration, but try to think about the amount of information that we are putting out there and sharing with others as bloggers – for free. Information that has taken a lot of time and hard work. How to posts with step by step photos that have explanations…posts that take hours to put together. The ads might be irritating, but that’s one of the ways I make an income from blogging.
Anyway, the key is staying consistent. Yes, we have to show grace. Life happens. There will be times that you cannot blog. Bug if you are serious about making money and you are able to, stay consistent. Don’t blog for three weeks straight and then disappear.
What did you start first, your IG or your blog?
I actually started my IG account first in 2016. It was just a fun way to share pictures of my home, but I always dreamed of starting my own blog from the very beginning. That dream seemed like more of a reality when we moved from our tiny rental into our current home in 2012. I started this blog 5 years later!
It’s been an amazing journey. There have been a lot of struggles and even tears but I want to encourage you to stay with it. The consistency will pay off.
That pretty much wraps up this blogger Q & A! I hope that maybe I helped you in the same way others have helped me. It’s something I’m very passionate about and love to talk about. I’m especially passionate for young moms who have that same desire as me to create.
Do you have anymore blogging questions??If so, please leave a comment below! I’d love to do another Blogger Q & A in the future!
